Are godparents/sponsors required to attend baptismal preparation classes before their godchild is baptized?
The role of a godparent/sponsor is very valuable in the Christian formation of a baptized child. Therefore, godparents/sponsors must be prepared in order to fulfill their roles in the Rite and in assisting the parents in their duties of raising the child in the practice of the faith. The Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart recommends and encourages, but does not require, that the godparent/sponsor attend classes. Do parents and godparents need to attend a preparation program again when another child is to be baptized? If the parents have attended a preparation program at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart within the last three years then they do not need to complete the preparation classes again. They do however still need to schedule an initial visit. More information on this matter should be discussed during your initial visit. Can a non-Catholic Christian be a godparent/sponsor?
