Are GM foods safe for human consumption?
To answer your first question, we do not yet know the full effects of eating genetically modified foods. We have done studies that say they “appear” to be safe, but no one knows the long term effects of these foods. It is also likely that these studies are funded my the same companies that make the GM foods. Humans increase the risks when they consume these foods in very large and consistent quantities rather than small, infrequent amounts. In terms of your second question, yes absolutely. These foods are modified to be more resistant to weather, insects, and grow to be much larger. All of these things increase production significantly.
