German Shepherds are no closer to wolves than any other breed of dog. They do have a distinctive bark though – but I’ve yet to hear mine howl. If you want to hear dogs howl like wolves, listen to a Husky. A neighbour of mine (around a mile away) has an Irish Wolfhound – I can hear him howling sometimes – fantastic noise! German Shepherds are not a guarding breed – they are a Shepherding breed – that’s why they are in the Pastoral Group and not the Working Group.
