GMOs are plants, animals, bacteria or other living organisms that have been genetically engineered by the insertion of a foreign gene. For centuries, farmers and plant breeders have improved crops and livestock, and to a lesser extent trees, by isolating and selecting for breeding the individuals with the most desirable traits.
