Are genetic conditions apparent at birth?
Genetic conditions are not always apparent at birth or even in childhood. It is possible for a genetic condition to become apparent at a later point in life. Some conditions or birth defects such as Down Syndrome or Spina Bifida may be diagnosed during a pregnancy or soon after birth. Other conditions, such as Fragile X, may not be diagnosed until later in childhood when a child is not meeting specific developmental milestones or exhibits behavior problems. Some genetic conditions are not apparent until adulthood such as certain cancers with a genetic basis and adult-onset disorders such as Huntington’s disease.
