Generic drugs are just like name brand drugs and can be more cheap than using your insurance company. They are a duplicate version of the drug which is usually manufactured by drug companies that specifically deal with making generic drugs. If the original manufacture puts a patent on a drug they will be the only ones permitted to sell the drug. The patent will expire at a point and when it does other manufactures can duplicate the drug and sell it at a better price than the brand name version. Generic drugs are cheaper because the invested money to produce it is substantially lower than it would be for the original manufacture. Research and development is not necessary and the only effort put into producing the generic version would be producing the drugs. The generic drug manufacture will use the exact same ingredient list and will be produced in the same manner as the brand name version.
