Are gay men separated & placed on protected status in state prisons ??
As a former corrections officer from Arizona, no. Homosexuals are not separated from the general public in normal situations. As a corrections officer, I encountered this on only 2 occasions, and in each case the “male” inmate was in the process of being transgendered, and had the upper parts of a woman and the lower parts of a man. Such a person would be highly sought after in a prison and had to be kept in a maximum security unit for this person’s safety and the stability of the unit. ———————— Yes, you are correct, situations such as you describe do happen. The Department will investigate allegations of sexual assault, pimping and prostitution IF it brought to their attention through a complaint, kite, or by an officer observing an incident. Protective custody is always an option for all inmates, but it is not something that a department will typically use proactively.
