Are game consoles winning the battle of the set top box?
The US is the only country in the world with more TV than people: 2.9 TV per household versus 2.6 people per household. Already 54 million houses in the US are equipped with an internet-enabled hybrid box via TiVo or Netflix. By which device you will connect your TV to the Internet is what all the industry manic is about: PC, game console (Wii, XBox, PS3), DVD/Blu-Ray player available this Christmas, or an open box bought at a consumer electronics, all connectable on the Internet. The game console looks like a favorite, since the first 20 million users in the US who have gone through the effort of connecting their TV to broadband usually have done so to… play games! The paradox is that only 14 million US users are actually using the internet services from their TV on a regular basis. Still, this is a good base for early adopters. “By 2014, 166 million TV will be broadband-enabled in the US,” Dr Moore said. “By 2013, 90% of the global consumer traffic on the internet will be video.” T
