Be a pretty dumb £bn market if there wasn’t something in perfume! And yes there is, firstly smells are strongly linked to memory, so they provoke very strong emotional responses. If you trigger the right emotion then you will get a reaction. But there are some fragrances which have general attractive properties, eg musk & amber which are synthetics of attractor chemicals used in the animal kingdom. Also some of the more narcotic floral fragrances (datura, patchouli, jasmine, frangipani) work well as stimulants. And, on yet another level, scent works at a subliminal level, so if something smells pretty, then it probably is pretty, and that is the message we get even if we are unaware of it. £bn can’t be wrong!
