Are foreigners able to buy land in the Republic of Bulgaria?
According to Article 22, Paragraph 1 of the Costitution of the Republic of Bulgaria (Amended in issue 18/2005) of the State Gazette, in effect after the Republic of Bulgaria’s EU membership agreement comes into force, and not applicable to international aggreements that the republic of Bulgaria is currently a party of): Foreigners and foreign legal entities can obtain the right to purchase land under the conditions related to EU accession or under the provisions of international traties that have entered info force in the Republic of Bulgaria through ratification, promulgation or acquired by legal succession. Since the EU membership agreement has not yet come into effect, the precedent provision of Article 22 of the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria should be enforced, according to which, foreign private or legal entities do not have rights to land ownership i.e agricultural or any other type of land in the Republic of Bulgaria.
