Question submitted February 2, 2005: Do you think that focused drive and ambition are inherited characteristics, or do you think they can be taught/learned. CyberShrink’s answer posted 2-4-05: We are tempted to offer a tongue-in-cheek answer by simply saying, “Yes”. As with probably all questions about nature versus nurture (or heredity versus learning), “inborn” or genetic characteristics are expressed in a social context which either fosters or mitigates their expression. Differences in activity level and in startle response are observed soon after birth, and relative passivity or activity (including aggression) are also observed quite early in the process of development. Our guess is that the capacity to have “focused drive and ambition” is based on genetically encoded aggression (that is, the capacity to fight or defend oneself) and is commonly expressed in those cultures which value those qualities.
