It has been said that flash floods are actually the most common natural hazard in the Colorado Springs area. This type of flooding is most likely to occur in the months of May through September. Floods are a Danger to More than Just Your Property Apparently the real danger lies in that often thunderstorms can’t be seen or heard by the people downstream. Of course, runoff from the mountains certainly can quickly cause water levels of the small brooks and creeks to quickly rise to flash flood levels. This is fast moving water and can reach heights of ten to twenty feet. It’s important to be aware of which streams and waterways are nearby when there is heavy rain. Never attempt to cross a flooding area. Interestingly, it only takes five to seven inches of fast moving water to knock a person off their feet.
