Are ESOL students exempt from the CRCT?
Generally speaking: No. ESOL students new to the U.S. public education system in their first academic year can be deferred from the language portion of the CRCT if they have participated in the state-mandated English proficiency test ACCESS, which is given yearly. Students are required to take the math and science portion of the CRCT. The decision to defer a student is made through a committee meeting by ESOL teacher, classroom teacher, guidance counselor, and principal. Parents have to be notified in writing of the decision.
