Are employers allowed to give out bad references?

Sometimes prospective employers phone up and ask off the cuff. Providing lateness was only a few times you shouldn’t need to worry. Getting on badly with people is more of a problem. Employers are looking for a happy team.

My boss told me that you’re not allowed to give a bad reference. She said the most you can say is “no they are not rehireable.” and i’m assuming the company asking for the reference can ask why.

no it against the law to give a bad reference but within the law to either write no comment or refuse u one at all- so your future employees have to make their own minds up

I don’t know if it is different for other states but in Michigan an employer is only suppose to say when you started and ended your job. Nothing else is allowed.

no they are not allowed to give bad references, but they can refuse to give a reference, which is pretty much the same as a bad reference
