Are DTIs Made to go with Weathering Steel (Type 3)?
Weathering Steel (Type 3) is steel that has had lots of copper, chromium, and nickel added to enable the surface oxide layer to reach a stable thickness under normal atmospheric weathering. Many bridges, for instance, are constructed from weathering steel, and are therefore left uncoated. Bolts in weathering steel bridges are also made from a weathering steel grade. DTI’s are used with weathering steel (also called “Type 3″) bolts. Usually, the DTIs are manufactured in Type III steel also for these applications. Applied Bolting makes 3/4″, 7/8″, and 1″ DTIs out of Type 3 steel both in standard DTI form and in Squirter® DTI form. Occasionally, bolts of a size different from 3/4″, 7/8″, and 1” are specified as Type 3 and DTI’s to match are requested. In these cases, dacrotized (ASTM F1136) and black polymer coated DTIs are available for use on weathering steel bolts.
