Experts have argued that the dogs do not stop people taking drugs and instead could encourage more dangerous behaviour, such as swallowing a bag of drugs to avoid being caught. Police Minister Michael Wright said the State Government would continue its tough stance on the illegal drug trade. “The three highly trained canines and their handlers have achieved remarkable results in a short period of time,” he said. “They should be commended for their commitment to disrupting drug taking and dealing on our streets.” The dogs can detect a range of drugs and alert their handler by sitting next to the suspect.
