Are documents related to the Multi-Purpose Canister program required to be included in the LSN?
A. The Multi-Purpose Canister program was intended to develop a common cask that could be used for dry storage, transportation, and disposal of commercial spent nuclear fuel. It was envisioned that a Multi-Purpose Canister would be placed into an overpack at the repository prior to disposal. The development program was terminated in the mid-1990s. Although not precluded by the design of the repository, no efforts are currently underway to design and certify a Multi-Purpose Canister. Therefore, documents related to the historical program to design and obtain NRC certification of a Multi-Purpose Canister should be excluded from the LSN.
