Are diamonds made of pure Carbon?

Theoretically…yes. However, because of the chemistry involved in God’s little E-Z Bake Oven (i.e.: the Earth, specifically the interior there-of), the likelihood of finding pure carbon diamonds is essentially zero. In fact, the graphite in your pencil lead is generally purer carbon than the best white diamond. The colours of diamonds are caused by impurities in the crystal matrix…and here’s the fun part…some of the “dirtiest” diamonds are worth more than the purest diamonds! Even man made diamonds are impure. We can’t make the mix hot-enough or the pressure high enough to produce 100% pure carbon diamonds. The catalysts used tend to insinuate themselves into the matrix, which is why artificial diamonds are cheap like borscht on comparison to “real” diamonds. Good Luck!
