Are dealers responsible for identifying items exempt from sales tax or will DOR provide a list of exempt items to the dealers?

The Florida Department of Revenue is providing a list of items to all registered dealers along with the TIP. This list of clothing items is also incorporated in the emergency rule and is extensive, but not all inclusive. This list also includes school supplies. Whether or not a school supply item qualifies as an exempt item is based on the labeling or packaging of the item. For example, items packaged/labeled as “notebooks” are exempt, but items packaged/labeled as “notepads” are taxable. The list also includes various types of printed items to help in determining whether they qualify for exemption as books. If a dealer has a question about a specific item not listed, the dealer should contact the Department at 800-352-3671, or our Internet site www.myflorida.com/dor.
