Cup and cone bearings are still common in hubs. Shimano and Campagnolo, in particular, still use loose ball bearings in almost their entire hub range, and they work great. Loose ball BBs are now almost exclusively for track bikes, with the exception of very cheap and nasty BBs and low-mid range BMXs, all (road/mtb) others are cartridge bearing. Ball bearings will probably always be available, but to the poster who can’t find axles in 130/136mm, I have a hacksaw and file you might like to meet.
