Are crested geckos good pets?
Crested geckos are one of the most suitable reptiles available. Cresteds are easy to keep and require lower temperatures than other reptiles. They are very handle-able, come in many different morphs and don’t need to be fed livefood. Crested geckos come from New Caledonia, which is near New Zealand. They have a tropical habitat with temperatures ranging from 70F to 85F, and need to be kept in a glass tank taller than it is wider due to their arboreal nature. The tank substrate should be cypress chips or other reptile safe wood chips. As the tank needs to be moist, sphagnum moss is suitable as bedding as it will hold water well. As well as the substrate, the crested gecko needs a water bowl, some fake plants and a hide. Hides can be anything from a sterilised toilet roll to a resin cave sold in reptile shops. Most cresteds are active at night. As for feeding, the crested gecko can eat a variety of pureed fruit eg. banana, papaya and can take live food such as crickets and mealworms. Liv
