Are contraceptive injections safe?
The three monthly injections that you mention are depot Provera. It is quite common for you to stop having periods when on this treatment. Some women find, however, that they get long-term spotting when using it. It does sound a bit unusual to get clots or a discharge – especially after being without periods for some time now. The first thing to remember is that although DP is a very good contraceptive, it is not infallible. If you were pregnant, bleeding in pregnancy might be a possibility. A quick pregnancy test would clarify either way. Infection can cause a discharge, and common ones include thrush, bacterial vaginosis and chlamydia. Infection can also lead to a change in bleeding pattern. Sometimes bleeding can be caused by growths on the cervix or the lining of the uterus, known as polyps. If you see your GP, she will be able to get a better idea of what is going on after speaking to you about what is happening in more detail. Swabs can rule out infection and a simple examination
