One problem with your question is that you are defining the American dream as owning a big house in the ‘burbs. Not everyone wants that. I’ll take the dog, save the McMansion and 2.5 kids. There are quantifiable ways to measure the American dream. Economic and social mobility factors measure how likely it is that someone can maintain and surpass the success of their parents. Assuming for the sake of argument that you are correct and the American dream is harder to achieve (not that I necessarily disagree, just that this in itself is a point of contention), there is no easy way to assign blame to the right or the left. Both parties are responsible for policies that could potentially lead to this problem. We would need to agree on the direct causes before determining the indirect ideology behind them.
