Are companies really embracing telework as a viable commuting option?
In short, yes. A recent nationwide study conducted by WorldatWork showed a 63% increase from 2004 to 2006 in the number of employers who allowed their employees to work remotely at least once per month. The increase went from 7.6 million in 2004 to 12.4 million in 2006. (Source: “Telework Trendlines for 2006,” WorldatWork) More and more companies are continuing to embrace all the benefits telework has to offer. In fact, the number of commuters teleworking in the metropolitan Washington region rose from 320,000 in 2004 to 456,000 in 2007, an increase of nearly 43%. And since teleworking has been proven to successfully boost employee retention, productivity and profitability, that number will surely continue to grow year after year.
