Yes rats do dig tunnels in the wild. I’m a farmer and believe me they do. They usually tunnel in weed rows close to fields where there food source is. Look around the nearby area and see if there is an abundant food source. They like nuts and seeds but will eat just about anything. They also collect weird objects. They like shiny things or as the younger generation calls it, bling-bling. lol.
