Are civil liberties better protected in a written or unwitten constitution?

Here in Britain we don’t have a written constitution we have a bill of rights and the Magna Carta. We are free from birth only if we have broken a law passed by Parliament is our freedom restricted which i believe is a far superior system. A written constitution in my mind is just a way for the state to manipulate or freedom and gives bureaucrats and lawyers handouts.
