Are Christians offended by the Da Vinci Code?
Look, you’re talking about a mere work of fiction, and not a particularly good one at that. And the Da Vinci Code isn’t a great deal better. Like your bible, it too is a work of fiction, although I did find it a lot more readable and much more relevant to 21st century life. So one fiction book (the bible) makes no mention of him marrying (although that would have been exceptionally unusual 2000 years ago); and another work of fiction says he did. Sorry mate! Can’t see anything to get so worked up about.
I could certainly see why Christians would be offended by the Da Vinci Code, because it defies what they believe in and claims parts of the Bible are fake. However, it is a fictional story, and was created for the purpose of entertainment, not the purpose of promoting a religious (or sacreligious) movement. (I have not read the book, but I have watched the movie, so I am basing my information on what I saw in the film).
What annoys me is people take the Da Vinci Code as being true. In time this book will go out of print and eventually be removed from library shelves, but the Bible will still be available (maybe not in printed form, it might be on something like a PlayStation Portable). If you look at the way God works, he often gives people an excuse to “not believe”. If you look in the Bible you will see the “first evangelists” were the Shepherds, what isn’t stated is that shepherds at that time couldn’t give testimony in court, so only those who wanted to believe them did so. Again, Mary Magdalene was one of the first to see the resurrected Jesus, but no one, apart from Peter and John, actually believed her. Does it make sense for the Apostles to dedicate their lives and, in the case of St Paul, years in jail for someone who survived being crucified? No, but it does make sense if they knew some miraculous event had happened.
