Are children using wheeled recreational devices such as roller blades and scooters or wheeled toys such as tricycles required to wear a helmet?
Although there are no legal requirements relating to children wearing helmets on wheeled recreational devices and wheeled toys it is strongly recommended that children wear helmets every time they use ‘bikes’ or wheeled toys, even in their own backyard. Children’s skulls are quite flexible and even mild impacts can cause damage to the brain.1 (footnote Henderson, M. (1995) The Effectiveness of Bicycle Helmets: A Review, Motor Accidents Authority of NSW). Correct helmet use by children is likely to prevent most head injuries in wheeled toy incidents.2 (footnote Bicylce Helmet Safety Institute of USA (2001/2002).
