Are children in the GATE program labeled and made fun of during recess?
Although children are designated as GATE in the district computer and in their cumulative record, this fact is not shared with the other students at the school. The GATE SDC classes participate in field trips and special curricular events with the other classes at their grade level and they are fully integrated into recess, lunch, PE, chorus and instrumental music. How will my child fit into fourth grade, coming from another school, when the GATE kids have been together for a few years? Due to the increase in class size from third grade to fourth grade, generally one-third of the class is new to the SDC setting, so there is not a stigma to joining the class at this level.
