CFUs add to the resources of the NSW Fire Brigades and the NSW Rural Fire Service. They do not replace them. CFU Members are not firefighters. They are volunteers who learn basic skills with basic fire fighting equipment to prepare and protect their homes when bushfires threaten. This helps to free up firefighters from the NSWFB and NSW Rural Fire Service so they can concentrate on moving fire fronts.
