With the advent of online and eCommerce business models, the role of the traditional cash register is quickly changing. Brick and mortar establishments that do not interact with the World Wide Web are decreasing in numbers, as are applications for the stand-alone cash register. As hybrid establishments gain a larger role in retail commerce, the equipment manufacturers that support online, portable wireless credit card processing, and similar electronic payment transactions are changing the shape and functionality of the equipment used at the point of sale. A few years ago, it was common to find a traditional cash register on a store counter, along with a card swiper, PIN entry device, a manual card impresser, and other ‘specialized gear.
