Are cardinals a cavity nesting bird?
Cardinals are not cavity nesters, but build their nests in dense shrubbery or among branches of small trees as high as 15 feet above the ground. They use bark strips, vines, rootlets, twigs and leaves, lining the nest with fine grass and hair. If you have a dog, brush him outdoors and let the fur collect on bushes where the birds can find it. Black oil sunflower and safflower are cardinals’ seed choices at bird feeders. Offer these from a hopper feeder that has enough room for the birds to stand and eat. Although they have been known to perch on a tubular feeder, cardinals prefer eating from a flat surface.
