Are capsules generally made from gelatine? And is there an alternative?
Q I was taking multivitamin supplements for many years before I realised the capsules could contain gelatin and have since switched. They never stated on the label that they contained gelatin so is it possible that they didn’t? Is there such a thing as gel-covered capsules that DON’T contain gelatin? A Capsules are generally still made from gelatine, although capsules made from plant-based gelling agents are also available (e.g. ‘vege-caps’). Plant-based capsules are more expensive than normal capsules so if a product uses them it will usually be stated on the label as it is a selling feature. I would say, therefore, that the supplement you used to take was in normal gelatine capsules.
