Yes. Dead and downed wood only may be used for campfires; live trees may not be cut for any purpose. Due to the presence of archeological sites throuhout Aniakchak, please refrain from any ground-disturbing activity when constructing campfires. Campers are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace Principles to reduce their impact on the Aniakchak environment.

All campgrounds except False Cape provide a grill or fire ring that can be used for charcoal or wood. Help prevent wildfires. Keep outdoor campfires small and contained within the grill/fire ring provided. Fires must be attended at all times and extinguished when left. Firewood is generally available for purchase at the park. Please leave firewood at home as a firewood quarantine has been established for the following localities: counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William; and the entire cities of Alexandria, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park. It is unlawful to transport firewood from these localities. Firewood can harbor insect pests, such as the emerald ash borer. The transport of infested firewood has been identified as a leading cause in the introduction of harmful forest insects into un-infested forest areas. Yes. Campfire RINGS are not allowed, at least not any new one. Contrary to popular opinion, it is not necessary to build a campfire ring in order to build a campfire, and in fact these rings – normally made out of stones – actually create a fire hazard by containing glowing embers that can escape and start a forest fire long after the hiker has left the campsite. HIKERS WHO START FOREST FIRES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH PUTTING OUT THE FIRE! Make sure any campfire is DEAD OUT! Using rocks to construct campfire rings also leaves behind ugly blackened rocks that will last for generations. It is OK to use an existing firering, just don’t construct a new one.
