Are British Shorthair cats good with children ?

A friend of mine is a British Shorthair fan and owns several. The females in particular seem to be quite aloof and more timid than the males, although if you read about the breed, you’ll see that this breed in general can be aloof and not inclined to like being held or handled all that much. My friend has only one cat that is what I’d call “friendly”. The others will come and check you out, but then go off and do their own thing. My friend finds the cats are the same toward her – a couple will come up to her for a pat, but they are not overly affectionate or people oriented. It sounds to me like the pet shop owner and you both have valid hesitations about getting this kitten. Firstly, it’s probably not such a bad thing that this cat is timid as a toddler has no idea on how to handle animals, no matter how well intentioned their parents (they just haven’t developed that part of the brain yet) and so can be unwittingly cruel to pets.
