Are bisexual and transgender people part of the gay community, or are they separate communities?
There is a substantial amount of overlap among sexual minorities. At one time in US history, bisexual and transgender people were part of the “homosexual community.” Over the years, as different identities sought specific recognition and acknowledgement of their legitimacy, the gay community expanded to specifically include lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders, hence the acronym GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender). Thus, bisexual and transgender people are definitely part of the GLBT community, and they are also separate communities. It is important to note that, while most gay and lesbian people consider bisexual and transgender people to be part of their community, some gays and lesbians consider their political issues to be different and at odds with the political issues of bisexual and transgender people.
