There are openings for both first and second years. Students are awarded [assistantships] shortly after being admitted to the program, and if accepted, they have the opportunity to continue in the position until they graduate. It’s often the case that someone receives an assistantship, begins working at it when they enter the school, and continues working at it for the duration of their two years. That’s an unusual stance for a business school, given that many other institutions are apprehensive about possibly overburdening their first-year students who are also trying to adjust to the intense MBA environment. Sure, I can see where that stance is coming from. It’s arguably a work load that can seem pretty daunting, whether you’re dealing with an assistantship or not. But we certainly don’t have any problem filling the assistantships. We’re able to make assistantship awards to probably about 30% of our students, and the number of students who are actually interested in having assistants
