Are art and craft materials safe?
The Art and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) evaluates products for many safety elements, including the presence of harmful chemicals. ACMI has been active since 1936 and has certified over sixty thousand products. Look for the ACMI labels and visit their website for more information. The American Society for Testing and Materials (now known as ASTM International) is a voluntary standards development organization that has established guidelines for labeling of non-toxic art products (D-4236). Look for these labels or endorsements on arts and craft products, including crayons, markers, finger or craft paint, and adhesives and glues.
