Yes, arranged marriages are still common in India. As opposed to west, young people allow their parents to make choises on their behalf. We basically believe that it is the union of two families rather than two individuals. This has two ramifications. One: there is too much interference which is bad (sometimes), two: there is ample support in times of need which is great (always). Love marriages are gaining momentum now a days, but most of the time with parental consent. Your suggestion of “arranged introductions” does hold ground.
