Are architecture students facing a fragile jobs market?

A year ago, placements were easy to find and students could choose where they wanted to work; now, the market is tightening and students are having to respond accordingly. The downturn has come fast, and many who left it until the summer are still looking for jobs. Some students who were offered placements a couple of months ago have been shocked when informed days before starting that they are no longer needed. A busy practice, acknowledging the slowing market, is now reluctant to take on new staff, and if pressure does build, is likely to take on more experienced staff, not students. Those practices offering placements are enjoying more choice, with a range of good CVs arriving, so competition is greater.
