For specific details on essay form and proper documentation, you should consult the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. All English courses at Scarborough ask students to follow MLA style guide and to use the short form of MLA citationwhich uses a standard form of parenthetical documentation to identify sources and reserves footnotes for additional information. For critical terms used in English courses, all students are expected to purchase The Bedford Glossary of Critical and Literary Terms (New York: Bedford/St. Martin’s, 1998). Another recommended book is The Happy Critic by Harvey Birenbaum (London: Mayfield, 1997). All of these books are available at the bookstore.
