cochineal, carmine, carminic acid and E120 are all the same thing and yes it is made from the body of a female beetle. other non vegan colours can include E101 – riboflavin, lactoflavin, vitamin B2 E101(a) – riboflavin 5′-phosphate E153 (believed animal-free version only may be used in food) – carbon black, vegetable carbon E161(b) – lutein E161(g) – canthaxanthin (although all these colours do have an equivalent veggie alternative so if you come across them they may or may not be from a veggie source – for example e161 usually comes from green veg but vegans have to be careful in case it comes from egg yolk).
