Are all three alphabets in Japanese used at the same time?
Strictly speaking, Japanese has three syllabaries, not alphabets. Each syllabary is used for a different purpose – Hiragana and Kanji (Chinese characters) are used to express indigenous and Chinese-influenced ideas and concepts (Another use for Kanji is to disambiguate in the event of possible confusion) while Katakana is generally used for imported words.
