Are all Red Cross chapters putting evacuees up in hotels?
A Some of the people who were able to evacuate first found hotel space. Many thousands went to Red Cross shelters. As the crisis deepened, hotel space became increasingly limited, so the Red Cross opened more shelters to provide safe accommodations for survivors of the hurricane. Many of those who were the last to leave New Orleans will be unable to find hotel space because there is none available in the region. The Red Cross is ensuring they find safe housing, mainly in shelters. We are working through our network of local chapters in communities in several states to integrate Hurricane Katrina survivors in new communities with all the benefits of long-time residents, as quickly as possible.
