Are all patent applications made public?
No. By default, the Patent Office publishes all applications 18 months after the filing date. However, an inventor may make a non-publication request when a design or utility patent is filed, and the patent office will not publish the application. A non-publication request may be filed with a design or utility application. Since provisional applications expire after one year, they are never published. All issued patents are published.
