Are all ice melt products created equal?
No, they are not. The primary deicing materials available today are: rock salt (sodium chloride), potassium chloride, urea, magnesium chloride and calcium chloride. These are divided into two categories. One group requires friction when the temperature is very cold. The other group melts ice and snow at low temperature by pulling moisture from the air. This process forms heat which in turn melts the product. The end result of the melting is the formation of brine. It is the brine that actually melts the ice and snow.
