Are All Gospel Music Teachers Created Equal?
My desire to play gospel music started at the early age of 6 years old. At that time we couldn’t afford a piano. It wasn’t until I was in the seventh grade that my mother purchased my first instrument. It was a Wurlitzer spinet. I can’t event began to tell you how excited I was. I thought all my problems were over! She signed me up with the city’s most well known piano teacher and in my opinion a gospel music legend. I was on my way to becoming the next gospel superstar in my hometown. I studied piano with this lady from the 7th to the 12th grade. Not one time did she teach me a lick of gospel, not even a hymn. I had become a really good classical pianist but I wanted more. After graduating for high school, I knew when I enrolled in college as music major, this institution for higher leaning would teach me everything I ever wanted to know about playing gospel music. I was under the assumption that the college music professors could do it all. Four years later and a plethora of music te
