Are all diabetics at risk for foot ulcers?
All diabetics may be at risk for foot ulceration, but not all diabetics are at the same risk level. Some diabetics take better care of themselves and will suffer fewer problems than others. Current U.S. statistics indicate that 40-50% of all diabetic patients will suffer some kind of foot problem that leads to an ulceration and possible loss of toe or foot in their lifetime. The diabetic patient with neuropathy who also has a foot deformity (claw toes, hammertoes, etc.), with prior ulceration or amputation is considered a high-risk person.
