Are adult male horses ok to be with foals in the medow, when its the father?
Heidi, if you have to ask a question like this, you have NO BUSINESS EVEN KEEPING A STALLION, much less breeding horses. Stallions are dangerous around young foals, Heidi- most of them will routinely attack them and kill them. Shires are HUGE horses with big feet, and it only takes a MILD BLOW to the head to kill a foal- or a person. Remember THAT. Plus, putting a mare and foal in with a stallion like that, when the foal may or may not be the stallion’s offspring, is another mistake. The mare will be spending all her time trying to protect her foal, while the stallion will spend all HIS time pursuing her, so that he can rebreed her when she comes into her foal heat, if not before that. In the resulting fracas, someone is going to get BADLY HURT sooner or later- and I’d give any odds that the foal will be the victim here. The stallion will also become VERY possessive about his mare- nature has programmed him to assume the role of herd sire whenever and wherever he’s with a mare or group
