Apart from medical reasons, and other preventions, what stops someone from giving blood?
I don’t know what you mean by “other preventions” but I do know that if you have had a tattoo within the last year, you are not allowed to give blood for fear that there may be hep C lurking around in your blood. There are also restrictions if you have recently been out of the country. Aside from those restrictions, some people have religious beliefs that forbid them from donating or receiving blood. A fear of needles would do it as well. I have a friend who is so scared of needles, she passes out if she gets a shot(i had to catch her when she got a tetanus shot a week ago).
Fear of needles may stop some people or of fear of the sight of blood. Some people will have had a bad experience after giving blood, such as fainting and not wish to repeat it. There are also those intrusive questions, and some people will have difficulty reading the form and filling it in so be too embarrassed and intimidated to go and have to admit that they have a problem with reading. I find that I often forget when the blood donation bus in is my town as I get a reminder but unless I actually am in town and see the bus I miss it. Other reasons would be if you are under weight, had a recent tattoo, been working abroad in a high risk country. Or are in a risk taking goup such as intravenous drug users.
According to the Australian Red Cross, to give blood: You cannot be under 16 You cannot over 70 You cannot be pregnant You cannot have given birth recently You cannot a heart condition You cannot have low iron You cannot have lived in the United Kingdom for more than 6 months between 1980 and 1996 You cannot have had a tattoo recently. Those are the basic reasons for the Red Cross in Australia. Other more specific reasons for not giving blood include restrictions on certain medications, restrictions for males who have had male to male sex or for people who have had sex with a sex worker. They also give you a survey which takes about 20 minutes to answer, and other things include restrictions on having dental work in the past few months, weight, piercings etc. It is actually very specific. When I went to give blood, they actually turned my offer down because I happen to have a mild case of tourette syndrome (this is not a swearing disease as many people believe, but a condition in which
